What is FES Cycling and it's benefits?

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Cycling is a powerful rehabilitation technique that combines neuromuscular stimulation with cycling to support cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and overall health in individuals with neurological conditions.

FES works by delivering small electrical impulses to specific nerves via adhesive electrode pads placed on the skin. These impulses stimulate the nerves, causing the underlying muscles to contract. When this stimulation is coordinated with a power-assisted cycling system, like the RT300 FES bike, it creates a smooth, natural pedalling motion, even in individuals with little or no voluntary movement in their legs or arms.

Pedaling Your Way to Fitness with FES Cycling

For individuals with partial or complete loss of movement in their lower or upper limbs due to a neurological condition, maintaining fitness can be challenging. FES cycling offers a practical and effective solution.

Getting a beneficial workout improves the health of your heart and lungs, rebuilds your muscles, helps with weight management & helps reduce spasticity.

Who Can Benefit from FES Cycling?

FES Cycling is suitable for individuals living with conditions such as:

You will also need a sufficient range of movement in your upper or lower limbs to accommodate the cycling motion. Your skin must be intact without open wounds or pressure sores, in the areas where the electrode pads will be placed.

Clinical research has demonstrated the following benefits:

  • Increased muscle strength and bulk, which can help with prevention of pressure sores
  • Improved Cardiovascular and Respiratory Fitness
  • Maintenance of muscle length and joint mobility
  • Improved range of motion
  • Improved core strength and postural control
  • Spasticity Reduction
  • Improved bladder | bowel function
  • Improved psychological and emotional well-being

The benefits are not limited to leg muscles. FES cycling can also stimulate the back muscles, stomach muscles and arm muscles. By stimulating the back and stomach muscles, you can improve your posture and potentially your ability to cough more effectively. To acquire and maintain these benefits you must commit to FES cycling as a leisure activity in its own right.

The RT300: Advanced FES Cycling Technology

At PhysioFunction, we use the RT300, an FES bike designed for both upper and lower limb rehabilitation. The RT300 allows precise, individualised stimulation of multiple muscle groups including:

  • Quadriceps
  • Hamstrings
  • Glutes
  • Abdominals and lower back muscles
  • Biceps and triceps (with upper limb attachment)

The RT300 adapts the intensity and timing of stimulation in real-time based on your performance, ensuring a safe and effective workout. It also tracks key metrics like session time, power output, and stimulation levels, giving you and your therapist data to monitor progress.

Getting Started with FES Cycling

After an initial assessment to determine your suitability and stimulation settings, you can gradually build up to 45 - 60 minutes per session, ideally 3 - 6 times per week. Consistent use is key to gaining and maintaining the benefits.

Committing to Your Health

FES cycling isn’t just a therapy, it's a lifestyle shift. With dedication, it becomes a sustainable and enjoyable part of your weekly routine, supporting long-term functional goals and a higher quality of life.
