Client Spotlight - Greg’s Journey

Greg first joined PhysioFunction in August 2022, bringing with him a courageous and determined spirit. Diagnosed with relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at 40, Greg continued to teach science for 14 more years before early retirement as his condition became more challenging. MS primarily impacted the right side of his body, and over time it became increasingly difficult to walk, initially without support, then with support, then using a wheelchair when he was out.

Greg and his wife continued to make adaptations to their home including adding a stair lift.

In June 2023, Greg experienced an MS relapse which resulted in significant loss of use of his right arm and leg. That combined with other medical complications, lead to a nine-month hospital and rehabilitation stay. He was told he would never walk again, and rehabilitation efforts initially focused solely on preparing him for a life in a wheelchair. However, Greg's resilience shone through.

With home adaptations in place and strong family support, Greg returned home, and back to PhysioFunction. His goals were clear: improve strength, balance and dexterity and regain as much independence as possible, including, if possible, walk again.

Rehabilitation Focus and Progress

Working closely with Claire, his physiotherapist, Greg’s therapy has involved hands on therapy and the use of specialist equipment, including the LiteGait system and parallel bars, with Greg recently adding hydrotherapy to his programme. He has also benefitted from Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) using the Bioness L300, aiding his walking ability.

Today, Greg can walk around his home using a rollator and manage daily tasks like showering, shaving, and eating independently with a knife and fork. Recently, he has even started attending a local gym, supported by a personal trainer, to further build his strength, stamina and function.

Life Beyond Rehabilitation

Greg’s hobbies have evolved alongside his journey. Once an avid golfer, fisherman, and cricketer, he now enjoys reading, watching sports, quizzes, and socialising with family and friends. He looks forward to returning to the theatre and live music events soon, with some extra support to make outings easier.

Greg’s Words of Wisdom for Others with MS

"Continue to exercise, even when it’s challenging. Adapt as things change. Ask for and accept help and make the best of every opportunity. Life still has so much to offer—it just looks a little different now."

Why Greg Chooses PhysioFunction

Greg describes PhysioFunction as "friendly, supportive, highly professional" with a wide range of therapies that adapt to his changing needs. He values the positivity of the team and the personalised care that has been essential to his remarkable journey.

Claire adds, “Greg’s dedication, positivity, and hard work are a constant inspiration. He’s a familiar, friendly face at the clinic, always ready with a smile and words of encouragement for fellow clients, and lively chats about his beloved Crystal Palace!”
