PFIT Bone Health

Part of the PFit Service at PhysioFunction - Unbreakable is the first of its kind, bone health program, specifically designed for people who are at risk of developing or who have been confirmed as having osteopenia or osteoporosis.

Osteopenia is a condition whereby the bones are weaker than would be expected for your age, but not sufficiently weak to be diagnosed with osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition where the bones become weak and fragile, leading to an increased risk of suffering a fracture. It affects all genders and ages, although it is most common women over 50, especially those who experienced menopause before the age of 45, but can also occur with:

  • taking high-dose steroid tablets for more than 3 months
  • other medical conditions – such as inflammatory conditions, hormone-related conditions, or malabsorption problems
  • a family history of osteoporosis – particularly a hip fracture in a parent
  • long-term use of certain medicines that can affect bone strength or hormone levels, such as anti-oestrogen tablets that many women take after breast cancer
  • having or having had an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia
  • having a low body mass index (BMI)
  • not exercising regularly
  • heavy drinking and smoking
  • lack of calcium and vitamin D

If any of these risk factors apply to you, or you already have a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis, then please get in touch to find out more about our UnBreakable program.

How PhysioFunction Can Help With Bone Health

Together with our partner Osteoscan UK, the first step is a Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry (REMS) scan to investigate the health and density of the bones of your hip and spine.

If a diagnosis of Osteopenia or Osteoporosis is made, your GP will be notified. With the approval of your GP, you will be invited to join the UnBreakable programme.

Weight-bearing exercise and resistance exercise are particularly important for improving bone density and helping to prevent osteoporosis. This is the basis for our UnBreakable program which is focused around the use of the Galileo side alternating vibration system and Desmotec D-Line and V-Line eccentric flywheel trainer.

At the end of the programme, you will be invited to return for a follow-up REMS scan to evaluate your progress.
