Introducing Neuromuscular Energising Therapy (NET)…….. Bridging the gap between Neuro & MSK

NET therapy, was developed by Physiofunction's Charles King MSCP, SRP, and synthesizes neurological and musculoskeletal physiotherapy, truly building the bridge between neurological and orthopaedic rehabilitation and treatment. It is an inter-active movement therapy using manual handling techniques to improve posture and function and to activate the body’s balance reactions.

NET is a hands-on treatment method whereby the Therapist gathers information about the state of an individual’s Central Nervous System (CNS), specifically the damage caused to the brain and transmission of information to the muscles via the nerves by maintaining hand contact with the patient.

This allows the Therapist to build up a “picture” of how much actual loss of muscle activity there is compared to how much appears to be lost. This information allows the Therapist to guide the treatment process in order to gain maximal recovery for that individual, even if that person has been told.. ‘you have plateaued’ or ‘you will never..’

NET treatment is tailored to the individual’s needs which means that he/she is actively engaged in the treatment rather than being a passive recipient of the treatment, making the whole recovery process a partnership between Therapist and patient. Often individuals may feel that they have received a boost in their muscle power and control, which can result in improved posture, co-ordination and balance, which can reduce the dependency of others.

NET is all about creating appropriate challenge at the appropriate time in a patient’s rehabilitation in order that the CNS can be stimulated into action allowing further recovery to occur.

Despite what is often stated by the Medical Profession, recovery can and does occur many years after the initial event and NET can open the pathways for this to happen.

  • NET is a structured and logical treatment approach examining the complexities of movement patterning and muscle activity
  • NET offers rapid and often dramatic results.
  • NET boosts patient’s energy and creates economical and efficient movement patterns which in turn can relieve pain.
  • NET has been shown to improve physical performance through dynamic postural realignment and creates a dynamically progressive challenge within the CNS, culminating in the technique of suspension, where the patient holds a given position absolutely precisely.

NET is a universal therapy system that can be applied to neurological and musculoskeletal patients of any age, at any stage of recovery and in acute or chronic situations such as; Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Head Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Parkinson’s Disease, Musculoskeletal Conditions, Sports Injuries & Arthritic Conditions.

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR THE TRAINING COURSES?
NET therapy can be utilised by the following practitioners; Physiotherapists (Neuro & MSK), Consultant Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Occupational Therapists, Chiropractors, Osteopaths, Pilates Instructors, graduates from Sports Science courses, Shiatsu Practitioners and anybody else that deals in Rehabilitation.

COURSE REVIEWS:

“NET, WOW! This technique has opened my eyes to a new way of ‘accessing’ the untapped potential of our muscles and movement. Many of my clients are very significantly impaired neurologically, and every one of those able to participate in the treatment has gained some improvement in their ability to move, after my completing just 2 days training, so far. It’s also taught me a way to assess and improve my own overused and abused musculoskeletal system, and my husband’s abdominals have never supported him so well.

I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this technique before, and think every Physio. and Occupational Therapist should undertake at least the basic course as the concepts are so simple and easy to apply. Roll over ‘old facilitation techniques’! Make way for a treatment that is ‘easily reproducible’, easy to progress and really ‘carry’s over’, even when performed by a complete NET novice. I can’t wait for the Upper Limb and Gait specific courses.”

Julia Cunniffe (Neurological Physiotherapist in Private Practice, MSCP)

The course emphasises the result for the patient and not the success of the technique as such, in other words one is encouraged to use hands and eye to constantly re-assess and act according to the patient’s reaction, and not the set path of a particular school of thought.  The courses are divided into three parts trunk, upper limb and lower limb, leading onto gait.  I would recommend these courses to anyone interested in treating neuro patients whether young or old, new to neuro physio or not – it is a very helpful tool.

Dagny Lund (MS Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist)

"NET has been more influential in developing my facilitatory handling skills than all my formal Bobath training put together – basic course, four advanced courses, and 2 years of Bobath Tutor Trainee modules”

Jon Graham, Clinical Director Physiofunction
